For over a decade, I’ve worked in the safety industry. I’ve walked job sites, sat in safety meetings, written policies, investigated incidents, and talked with hundreds of workers across all types of industries. And one thing I’ve noticed time and time again is this:

But here’s the hard truth: DEI programs often benefit organizations far more than the people they claim to help.

But here’s the real question: Why would you want to work for a company or attend a school that feels compelled to hire or admit you just to meet a diversity quota? Why should anyone want to work for a company or attend a school that feels pressured to include them based on a checkbox?

Why should external incentives dictate hiring or admissions instead of focusing on skills, merit, and unique abilities? While DEI initiatives were created to champion inclusion, there’s growing concern that they might unintentionally create separation, focusing too heavily on superficial characteristics like race or gender instead of deeper attributes like character, skills, or critical thinking.

The uncomfortable reality is that DEI often rewards organizations for not being discriminatory, rather than fostering genuine diversity or inclusion. By focusing on quotas and incentives, it turns people into statistics and perpetuates the very inequalities it claims to solve.

DEI: Benefiting the Organization, Not the Individual

One of the biggest flaws in DEI programs is that they’re designed to benefit organizations, not individuals. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), for example, offers businesses financial incentives to hire individuals from underrepresented groups. In 2022 alone, over 2.5 million WOTC credits were issued, representing a 23% increase from the previous year.

For organizations, these credits are a win — they save money and boost their public image. But for employees, the experience can be dehumanizing. In my experience, I’ve seen companies claim diversity milestones while failing to create environments where people feel respected and valued.

These organizations meet government standards for diversity but often stop short of fostering genuine inclusion. It’s performative at best, and it sends the message that fairness can be bought. As humans, we’ve come too far to accept such a transactional approach to equity. Decency and fairness shouldn’t need a price tag.

The Cost of Being a Token

For employees and students, being part of a DEI initiative often feels like being reduced to a statistic. Imagine starting a new job, only to realize you were hired to fulfill a quota. Instead of pride in your accomplishments, you’re left wondering if you truly earned your place.

I’ve spoken with people who felt the pressure of having to “prove” themselves more than their peers because they were seen as “diversity hires.” This constant pressure creates stress and undermines confidence, leading to burnout and frustration.

Worse, these programs often ignore the systemic issues that create barriers to success in the first place. By focusing on quick fixes like quotas and incentives, DEI programs fail to address the deeper cultural changes needed to foster lasting equity.

If DEI is failing individuals, what’s the alternative? The first step is to shift focus away from external characteristics and toward skills, merit, and character. I've consulted Safety VPs, worker comp representatives, and HR professionals, probing into the selection process of safety data outputs. Astonishingly, the consensus is uncertainty. Many resort to data collection software and churn out KPI reports using tools like Power BI. But does this truly equip them to predict accidents? Regrettably, the answer is a resounding no. A staggering 90% of the data collected and scrutinized constitutes lagging indicators—essentially, actions taken only after an incident occurs.

The crux of the issue lies in the absence of early warning signs for safety concerns. Furthermore, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Managers often lack sufficient training in Predictive Analysis. Reports generated through platforms like Power BI or Tableau boast complex interfaces, learning curves which cause a major challenge. According to the National Safety Council, there were more than 4 million medically consulted injuries in 2021 and the numbers continue to rise. In 2021, the industry sector experiencing the largest number of preventable fatal injuries was construction, followed by transportation and warehousing. The industry sector experiencing the highest fatality rates per 100,000 workers was agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting, followed by mining. (Work Safety Introduction - Injury Facts, 2023)

This is why it is so important that employers implement safety measures and programs to mitigate injuries and prevent worker injuries. Many employers have developed employee Fit for duty programs which are recommended by OSHA to help identify the physical, mental, and emotional state. To determine if employees can function safely without getting themselves or someone else hurt. This has helped many workplaces use these programs for at-risk or high-risk employees prior to placement. Ultimately, preventing workers' compensation claims and other indirect costs such as team member replacement, training, investigation cost, etc.

Some workplaces use them as pre-employment tools and they have also been used as part of a return-to-work program. So that an injured employees can return to work as soon as they are able to perform their work safely.

Cons of Fit for Duty Programs

Even though Fit for Duty programs have been seen as effective programs there is a downside. Many of these programs lack accessibility and frequency. Many times, employers who use this style of program are required to schedule an exam with a medical provider which can take days or hours. This in turn can cause a loss in productivity, downtime, and push back start dates for new hires. Once the employee completes the exam the employers will have to wait several hours or a few days for the results. In terms of frequency, employers can only perform the exam on one employee at a time or as the employee returns back to work from an injury. The traditional fit-for-duty program puts some limitations on employers and doesn't help employers easily track which team members are at high risk for an injury accident. That's were we can help! According to the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) reports an estimated $100 million in scholarship money still goes unawarded each year, mostly due to a lack of applicants. I have been an EHS professional for a decade now and it didn’t dawn on me how many EHS scholarships and grants that are available for students to pursue an education in the field of Environmental, Health and Safety until I did some research.

The world of data has taken us by storm with Al technologies that can predict patterns in human behaviors to robots that are built to preserve human life. Data is what drives safety performance in the workplace especially when it comes to audit records, tracking injuries, closed incident investigations as well as the number of hazards reported in the workplace.

Today’s technology is rapidly changing the way companies approach workplace safety. After a decade of working as a Safety Professional and using data to prevent accidents in the workplace, one thing that I have learned is that data changes everything. Tech advancements in the world of data analytics have changed the way many businesses engage and lead their teams. Some have earned significant returns after applying the proper EHS data strategies to drive workplace safety.

Even though technology is getting better each year, many companies have failed to develop effective EHS data strategies that provide real-time information on how to drive down injuries and possible environmental exposures. Many companies are currently operating at or near the lower end of the data spectrum by collecting a limited number of the same EHS data points that they have collected for decades and calculating the same EHS lagging indicators which give them minimal information on what really going on in the workplace.

Most times the information provided the information does not answer why accidents continue to happen or if the countermeasures are really working. Their data is based on speculation and assumption, not the facts. The team should not just be interested in a low incident rate but the specific steps they took to drive down the number of accidents in their workplace.

To develop an effective EHS data strategy the company will need to incorporate several data techniques:

1) Select data visualization tools to be used for EHS analytics. There are several of these types of tools on the market such as Power Bi or Tableau that can be used to help your team see what their data looks like in a chart or graph. It is imperative that the team is properly trained in how to use the basic functions of the system to ensure that they are getting the most out of their data. Think of it this way the team will only use the data if they can understand how to get to it.

Another reason to use data visualization tools is that many companies still use whiteboards and white sheets of paper to present data which in turn offers a poor environment to ask questions, drill down, and track data in real-time. It does not allow for the team to get to the root of the problem. Once the data is eased or the sheet of paper is thrown away no one ever thinks about the EHS data again. Trust me, I would urge teams to break that habit and use large computer monitors in their meeting areas to present information.

2) Find the right EHS KPIs for the team. Selecting the proper EHS KPIs and metrics that are critical. Each company’s KPIs may be different as many companies have different EHS goals. It’s always a good idea to survey management and leadership to see what the top 3 KPIs are that would be beneficial to them when making decisions around safety and environmental projects. Knowing what your stakeholders want is a good start, but I would challenge them to also establish new or different EHS data points every quarter to see if you can get new answers to your problems.

Also, when formulating your EHS data strategy, think about what metrics are currently working for your organization. What KPIs will other teams need? How will you collect the data needed for the KPI? (i.e., PPE vending machines, EHS Management Systems, Manual Entry, Wearable Technology, Body Detection cameras, etc.) What goals exist within your organization that you may need to align with?

3) Keep your EHS data creative and interesting. Looking at EHS data can be a tedious task for any team member. That’s why it’s important to make sure the data is clean, clear, and consistent. It should be easy on the eyes and modern. Think of it this way your EHS data dashboards should be something people want to share. It needs to help create dialogue within the team. It should cause them to ask why or how we can do better. Some interesting sample EHS indicators to use could be:

Top 3 forklifts involved in workplace accidents.
Top 2 gloves worn during hand injuries.
Top 2 boots worn during foot injuries.
Top 3 work areas for most team members to slip or fall.
Top 3 jobs most likely to get someone hurt.
Average number of Stop Works in week/month.
Total Workplace Stress levels of floor team members.
Average amount of sleep employees get at night.
Average number of team members who are fully hydrated.
Average amount of time spent on safety topics per day.
Average time for team members to complete safety quiz.
Average test scores on completed safety quizzes the first time.

Your EHS KPIs should be getting more specific each year as you better understand your data and how to apply it in your business. One thing that I would recommend is to create one or two new EHS KPI data points per business quarter and allow the team to weigh in on how well the targets are providing information to move forward. This will help keep the EHS dashboard and scorecards fresh and allow leadership teams to have different information to discuss during meetings.

4) Share EHS data only with those who need it. One of the biggest frustrations with sharing EHS data is sending the wrong data to the wrong facility or department. This is why it is important to set security restrictions and follow your company’s rules on sharing data within our organization. I would recommend only sending EHS data to a specific department or location. It’s always inconvenient when you open a safety data report, and you can’t find what you need because you must decipher through every other facility's data.

EHS Data and analytics should be an integral part of leading a company’s EHS programs as it helps management understand why accidents are occurring. Using data analytics and predictive data analysis in your EHS program can decrease workplace accidents, reduce overhead costs that directly impact the company’s bottom line, improve employee morale, and strengthen the business's reputation. Ultimately incorporating data analytics is imperative to the life of your business.

It’s not just a good idea but it’s good business sense. It could determine the life or direction of your company. It’s a small investment for a tremendous cause. Your team’s safety can only get better if you are able to see the patterns of wrongs that happened in the past to correct the future. This can only be done by using data to combat accidents.

Hello, my name is Tony Mudd, and I am a proud Kentuckian and business owner who has dedicated my whole life to ensuring American workers go home safe. Each year thousands of Kentuckians go to work to build our homes, roads, schools, and hospitals to provide food for our families. To provide care for the sick and injured.

To create goods and provide services for people around the world. Their hard work and diligence improve the quality of our lives, families, and communities. It is a tragedy when a mother, father, sister, brother, or child goes to work and does not return home and a family’s loss is immeasurable. It not only hurts the family but the whole community. No one is ever the same.

The grief of loss disrupts the lives of those who matter most. I have witnessed this firsthand after my grandfather was tragically injured while on the job. He was crushed by 5,000 pounds of timber. It is my belief that no one should get hurt for a paycheck. No cuts, bruises, sprains, or damage; They leave the workplace the same way they came - uninjured.

Unfortunately, Kentuckians lose their lives each year on the job while others suffer from life-changing injuries and severe illnesses, and I propose that we as Kentuckians gather each year to honor the memory of all the fallen Kentuckians and rededicate our efforts to improve workplace safety and health for every workplace in the bluegrass state.

I ask that we help me build a Worker's Memorial Garden in the state of Kentucky. This would honor all Americans who have been injured, gotten sick, or lost their lives while on the job. This monument would not only honor those who have fallen in the workplace, but sharing some information on why worker safety is so important and why we must fight for a safer future. It will have beautiful flowers, bushes, trees, and plaques that display information throughout the area. It will be open and free to the public.

Workers’ Memorial Day… Why Safety Matters In The Workplace?

On January 24th, 1996, Joe, a career company veteran of 25 years, and a husband and father of 5, went to work and did not come home. On that night, his wife of 45 years received one of the most terrifying phone calls of her life. Joe’s employer called, informing his wife that she needed to get to the job site right away.

Filled with fear, wondering what she would witness when she arrived, she left immediately and headed to the job site. When she arrived, she was overwhelmed by the blaring sounds of fire engines and paramedics; her sight was blocked by a sea of police officers flooding the crowd. Struggling to hear past the pounding sounds of her heartbeat, Joseph’s wife rushed forward, as close as she could get. There she saw Joe’s fellow work community gathered around the facility, eyes filled with tears and faces hung low with grief, asking if Joe was still alive. As his wife stood tall, pulling together all the strength she had left, one of Joe’s friends from the facility approached her saying, “I’m so sorry to tell you this, but Joe was crushed; crushed by 5,000 pounds of lumber.” Unable to bear the news, his wife fainted.

Joe was crushed by a load of wood that was hoisted and accidentally released by an untrained crane operator who claimed that he did not see Joe working in the area. The crane operator’s failure to see him changed Joe’s life forever. Joe was rushed to the local hospital where due to his legs, feet, and lower torso being crushed, he underwent 16 hours of reconstructive surgery. Joe had over 60 broken bones and was told that he would never walk again. For 12 dreadful months, Joe was paralyzed from the legs down, restricted to a body cast, and unable to walk and care for himself.

After one full year of being confined to a body cast and another 2 years of physical therapy to gain back his mobility, Joe lost his job, and his mental health deteriorated from post-traumatic stress disorder. Although Joe survived this incident, it did in fact take his life; his life of providing for his family and being free from pain and agony. This man named Joe was my grandfather. At the young age of 7, I watched as my grandfather fought for the life he once knew. From struggling to walk with a cane to limping and holding onto walls as he made his way to the restroom, to going from one doctor’s appointment to another and taking several prescription medications each day, my grandfather was not the same.

Following this incident, I could never play ball with him, go on road trips, or have him stand by my side as I graduated from school. Although he survived physically; mentally and emotionally he did not make it. He was never himself again. This incident not only stole his life; it stole my experiences with him as well. As a result, workplace safety is not just a job, it’s personal. I know what it feels like to be on the other side of the investigation receiving the call that changes everything.

When I think of my grandfather, a hardworking and committed family man who had given so much just to take care of others, and who believed in creating his own future, I can’t help but think about that future being taken from him. His future was taken because others did not see the value in being proactive vs reactive. Like many other injuries in the workplace, my grandfather’s injury was preventable. I went into the field of Workplace Safety to prevent someone else from having to experience a story like my grandfather’s. To prevent another person from having their whole life changed in a split second. I went into the safety industry because I naturally care about people. I believe that all people deserve to make it home safe.

After working as a Safety Professional for several years I noticed that it was very difficult at the beginning of my career to acclimate to the field of safety. I mean I had the passion, hard work and leadership skills but I was missing my own set of tools to help make my job a little easier. I don’t want the same for you, so I created a list of the Top 12 Tools Every New Safety Professional needs in their toolbox!

1) Gottcha Stick: Also known as the Safe Distance Scale or OSHA Ruler, it is one of the most effective and inexpensive tools a new safety professional can have. It’s portable and works great when conducting inspections on machine guarding to ensure your team remains in compliance with proper standards.

2) Safety Professional's Reference and Study Guide: This is a great tool to use as a reference when looking up safety procedures, techniques, and safety standards. I personally used this book when I was preparing the complete the CSP Exam. Though this book is expensive, you can purchase older editions or even used versions of the book for a more affordable price.

3) OSHA General Industry 29 CFR 1910 or 1926 Regulations and Standards Book: Having OSHA regs is a must-have for all Safety Professionals. These are great books tool to have especially if you are in a location with poor internet reception or network. From my experience, it is always a good idea to have a hard copy of the standards for your industry right at your fingertips. You never know when you will need to reference or up look a reg to ensure compliance.

4) HazMat Emergency Response Guidebook ERG 2020 : Spill cleanup can be a dangerous job that why it’s very important to have this Hazmat ERG application. This is a great mobile free educational tool and can be used as a quick reference to look up and find information on proper handling and storage or incident response of Hazardous Materials.

5) OSHA Heat Safety Tool: As the climate continues to change and heat rises combat temperature in the workplace is always a battle in the workplace especially if you are in the construction or transportation industries. This free mobile App is another great tool that allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their worksite, and based on the heat index, it displays a risk level for outdoor workers.

With a simple "click," you can get reminders about the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level to protect workers from heat-related illness, reminders about drinking enough fluids, schedules for ongoing rest breaks, information on knowing what to do in an emergency, and so much more!

6) Yellow Safety Vest with Pockets: Not all safety vests are created equal. Having a safety vest with multiple deep pockets can be a lifesaver. You can carry pens, notes, flashlights, laser pens, phones, locks/tags, extra ear plugs, and even first aid supplies. This is also a great way for team members to locate you if needed, which will help you to build rapport within the team.

7) Comfortable Boots or Foot Insoles: Safety professionals spend much of their time on their feet going to the problem, asking questions, and working with the team to develop solutions. As a safety professional you are always on the go and constantly moving. Having comfortable boots or insoles will help make your day go smoothly. Trust me - you don’t want to walk a mile in bad boots because you will pay the price! So, take some time and try out different kinds of boots and insoles to see what works for you.

8) Pocket Size First Aid Kit: This first aid kit can come in handy especially if you walk up on a team member that needs your help. With this portable kit, you won’t have to worry about leaving the team member to run back into the office – you’ve got the first aid supplies with you!

9) NIOSH Ladder Safety App: This free mobile application is another good tool designed to improve extension and step ladder safety by making sure ladders are properly leveled and stable. This is a great tool if you are in the construction industry or have team members or contractors who will be doing tasks that require ladders.

10) First Aid American Red Cross Workplace Safety App: This is another free mobile application that offers lifesaving instructions during emergency situations. This is a good tool for team members who have not had first aid training but may be faced with an emergency whether it be at home or in the workplace

11) NIOSH Sound Level Meter App : This free mobile application measures sound levels in the workplace and provides noise exposure parameters using either the built-in microphone of a user’s device or an external microphone. Workers can share measurements as HTML or PDF reports. The only downside is that it is only offered for iOS systems.

12) SOS Alert | Emergency & Safety App : This is another free mobile application that allows people to send SOS Alerts to teammates in their emergency contact list and provide them with their current location. This is a really good tool to have both in the workplace as well as at home use.

4 Simple Steps: Get Listed as Authorized OSHA Outreach Instructor

I decided last year to pursue my Authorized Outreach Instructor Trainer Certification for the General Industry, however, after reviewing the requirements and completing the OSHA training classes I was confused about how to get listed on OSHA’s Find Outreach Trainers website .

After searching OSHA’s federal website online, I decided to reach out to my outreach training provider via email. I was told that this can be easily done by logging into my outreach training portal with my selected username and password. If you don’t have an account, you must create one and this may take a day or so to get approved by the Outreach Training Facility .

Instruction: Step One

After logging into the portal, you will see three different profile categories including Forms, Historical Records, and Account Information.

Instruction: Step Two

After clicking the Update Account Values tab, it will take you to another screen where you will enter your contact information including your name, address, phone number, and website. There is also a button that states “I agree to share my contact information with OSHA.gov so that students electronically searching for OSHA 10/30 Hour Outreach training opportunities can contact me”. You want to make sure to click “ Yes ”.

Instruction: Step Three

After updating your information, it may take several weeks for the system to populate your information as an Authorized Outreach Instructor on the Federal OSHA website.

You Are What You Eat: The Effects of Poor Nutrition & Worker Safety

After working in world-class manufacturing and distribution facilities I can tell you that worker nutrition is something that is often overlooked and unfortunately, as a result, worker performance suffers. Think about it: Imagine a high-profile athlete eating a diet filled with sugary and salty snacks, only drinking soda, coffee, and energy shots. How would they perform? What do you think would happen? If you said anything close to crashing, poor performance, increased tiredness, or inability to execute - you would be correct.

According to Healthy Performance, research has shown that inadequate nourishment can reduce employees’ efficiency by 20% and that poor nutrition is directly linked to absenteeism, sickness, low morale, and higher rates of workplace accidents.

In today’s fast passed society, nutrition is as important as ever. Salty, fatty, or sugary snacks from the office vending machine may give us a quick boost, but in the long run, they are only slowing us down. Sugary foods such as chocolate bars and snack cakes offer forms of energy that hit the bloodstream straight away making us feel recharged. This causes the body to react and produce insulin which helps to digest sugar properly and prevent the blood glucose from going too high at once. However, as this fails and the glucose levels plummet again, the body is forced to generate too much adrenaline which can then lead to nervousness, irritability, and depression.

In the workplace, the short-term dehydrating effects of caffeine, salt-laden foods, and fatty foods are strongly linked to a decrease in mental performance and an increase in headaches. Over time, employees indulging in too many processed foods are at risk of developing a range of serious health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

In addition, Healthy Performance conducted a research study and determined “In 2011, 59% of adults surveyed cited “hard to get at work” as the most popular reason for not eating fruit and vegetables; 62% of those surveyed said they skipped lunch or ate at their desk at least once a week, and 20% said they never take a lunch break at all”.

According to the International Labor Organization, “Poor diet on the job is costing countries around the world up to 20 percent in lost productivity. Poor meal programs and poor nutrition impact so many workplace issues including morale, safety, productivity, and the long-term health of the workers. Actually, there are few workers who are happy with their meal arrangements", says Christopher Wanjek, the author of the study, Food at Work: Workplace Solutions for Malnutrition, Obesity, and Chronic Diseases. The study also stated:

In wealthier nations, obesity accounts for 2 to 7 percent of total health costs - In the United States the annual economic cost of obesity to businesses with respect to insurance, paid sick leave, and other payments totals $12.7 billion USD.
In the United States, where over two-thirds of the population is overweight, direct medical costs accounted for approximately $51.6 billion USD and lost productivity approximately $3.9 billion USD. This was reflected as 39.2 million lost workdays, 239 million restricted-activity days, 89.5 million bed-days, and 62.6 million physician visits.

Too often, food at work is viewed as an afterthought or a hindrance by employers and is often a "missed opportunity" to increase productivity and morale. Canteens, if they exist, routinely offer an unhealthy and unvaried selection, while vending machines are also regularly stocked with unhealthy snacks and sodas. Oftentimes, workers don't have the time or place to eat wholesome healthy foods.

It is shocking to see how often nutrition gets overlooked when determining if a worker is performing at their peak or not. Many times, I have worked with employers to help them understand the value of assessing their nutritional environment as it pertains to worker safety and overall performance. This could be a fundamental part of employee wellness programs to prevent unnecessary diseases and illnesses. It is important to encourage team members to prepare their own food for work and regularly educate them on the basics of good nutrition.

Something that is important to remember is that safety starts in the gut. It's what our team members are eating that gives them the energy to be aware of their surroundings, recognize hazards, and be active safety leaders. Maybe even in the workplace, the old adage is true: you really are what you eat.

Should Dehydrated Employees be Allowed to Perform High-Hazard Jobs?

Decreased hydration has been shown to result in significant health issues, causing critical damage to the body and its functions. With the human body being comprised of 60% water, hydration is more than a recommendation, it's a necessity. In the workplace, proper hydration should go as far as being considered a form of personal protection. It should be something that is at the front of every safety conversation before, during, and even after the summer months. What many employers may not understand, is that dehydration is a safety hazard.

As a person who has both seen and suffered the effects of dehydration, feeling lighted-headed, weak, and slow to react, I know all too well just how much this inhibits a person's functioning. Dehydration is something that workers shouldn’t experience in the workplace; however, it does happen. One way to recognize that dehydration is happening is to notice that feeling of the body running on empty and being unable to carry out its normal functions. When someone loses fluids, they must then be replaced as soon as possible, to avoid an imbalance of salt and sugar in the body. This type of response in the body not only affects performance, but it threatens worker safety. This experience can cause severe heat stress that, if not immediately addressed, could lead to headaches, light-headedness, loss of consciousness, or other severe and potentially fatal complications.

It has been said that the average adult has about 2.6 million sweat glands, which activate when the brain determines that the body must be cooled down. This takes a real toll on those whose jobs involve physical labor. Estimates suggest that workers who wear heavy protective clothing can lose as much as 2.25 liters of fluid every hour. To replace it, NIOSH and the Centers for Disease Control recommend that moderately active workers drink one cup of water every 15 minutes, whether they feel thirsty or not.

According to the journal article, Responses of the Human Brain to Mild Dehydration and Rehydration Explored In Vivo by 1H-MR Imaging and Spectroscopy, dehydration decreases brain-tissue fluid, which can result in changes to brain volume. This could be a reason why dehydration leads to lower mental performance. As stated in the article, Heat Stress, and the Dangers of On-The-Job Dehydration, a one percent drop in hydration is enough to cause a 12 percent drop in worker productivity. At three to four percent dehydration, productivity can plunge by an astounding 25-50 percent.

Studies show that it only takes 2 percent dehydration to cause impaired performance in tasks that require attention, motor, and memory skills. This type of severe dehydration can also result in impaired cognitive abilities.

For workers operating heavy machinery, this kind of impaired performance is both risky and hazardous in the workplace. Dehydration continues to prove itself as such a significant factor in the workplace, as recent studies have found that participants committed a significantly higher number of driving errors when they were dehydrated. What this data also revealed was that these numbers were just as significant as individuals who completed similar tests while at the legal blood alcohol content limit. This means that being dehydrated in the workplace is just as dangerous as working under the influence.

According to the article, How Heat Stress Affects Performance, a performance study was conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) using telegraph key operators which showed that in temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the operator will make five errors an hour and 19 mistakes after three hours. At 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the operators made nine mistakes per hour and 27 mistakes after three hours. At 95 degrees Fahrenheit, the mistakes went to 60 in one hour and the mistakes to 138 in three hours. Though errors made by telegraph key operators may not be critical, this same hot environment will produce a similar number of errors in workers, regardless of the task being completed. These numbers are beyond shocking.

Being unable to properly assess workplace hazards can be a major source of incidents. As a result, dehydration is something worth assessing in the workplace, as it poses a grave concern for worker safety performance and overall health.

As a Safety Professional, I always advise employers to ensure that all workers are properly hydrated. Usually, this is done by developing a worker hydration program that helps assess, track, and replenish water during the peak months of the year or when intense work arises. Dehydration is a safety hazard, but with the right tools, awareness training, and available water options it is also 100% preventable.

Is a Stressed Worker a Safe Worker?

Stress in the workplace is something we know all too well. Whether it's working from home or going back into the office, Safety Professionals across the globe may encounter different team members who are irritated, grumpy, isolated, and tense. Stress affects American worker safety performance in so many ways. According to the article, The Effects of Acute Stress on Performance: Implications for Health Professions Education, “Elevated stress levels can impede performance on tasks that require divided attention, working memory, retrieval of information from memory, and decision making”.

In addition, the article, The Effect of Stress on Employee Performance and Job Satisfaction stated that "High levels of worker stress contribute to decreased organizational performance, decreased employee overall performance, high error rate and poor quality of work, high staff turnover, and absenteeism due to health problems such as anxiety, emotional disorder; work-life imbalance; depression and other forms of ailments such as frequent headache; obesity and cardiac arrests."

We do know that sources of workplace stress vary. In an article, Employee Burnout, Part 1: The 5 Main Causes, the author identified five main causes of stress for employees:

Unfair treatment at work.
Unmanageable workload.
Lack of role clarity.
Lack of communication and support from the manager.
Unreasonable time pressure

Many discussions about workplace stress are often focused on productivity, however, organizations should also pay attention to the impact it has on overall workers’ Health and Safety.

Stress can be a total distraction. According to the Mental Health Foundation, stress is "The feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure". Unfortunately, this is often the experience of so many workers in the workplace. Not only is this a common experience for so many employees, but it is often an unspoken one. Many times, workers will experience stress concerning things that they've heard about in the workplace, ranging from rumors regarding layoffs, a recent disagreement with a coworker, or an upcoming deadline they've yet to meet. This level of stress, gone unaddressed, can often overwhelm the mind, cloud judgment, and ultimately lead workers to forget safety protocols or make mistakes that lead to injury.

Stress can lead to taking risky shortcuts. Taking shortcuts really means performing a job with minimal effort. Why would someone do this on the job? Oftentimes the answer is stress. When a worker is stressed, shortcuts often seem like the best line of defense to fight against the reality that they just don't have the brainpower, energy, or motivation to get a task done the way they know it should be. Unfortunately, this risk of taking shortcuts can lead to injury or even death in the workplace. Even if all safety precautions are followed, the moment a worker decides to perform a job with minimal effort, taking a shortcut to complete the task at hand, they run the risk of causing harm.

Stress can lead to worker substance abuse. Drugs and alcohol are often used as maladaptive coping skills to cope with high levels of stress. This includes stress both inside and outside of the workplace. Oftentimes, stress that exists outside of the workplace finds its way inside the work environment, which causes strain for employees. Some employees will then turn to substances as a false sense of support to assist them with the daily tasks of their jobs. Not only is this a concern for the mental health of so many workers, but it also creates problems for worker health and safety, jeopardizing the safety and well-being of workers and their counterparts.

Stress can contribute to workplace violence. According to the National Safety Council, every year, millions of American workers report having been victims of workplace violence. In 2020, according to Injury Facts, assaults resulted in 20,050 injuries and 392 fatalities.

Certain industries, including healthcare, service providers, and education, are more prone to violence than others. Taxi drivers, for example, are more than 20 times more likely to be murdered on the job than other workers, according to OSHA.

An alarming number of workplace injuries are due to assaults. While other factors are often at play in workplace violence incidents, stressed-out workers are more likely to engage in acts of violence, which can lead to worker injuries or even traumatizing situations.

As a Safety Professional, I believe that employers have a responsibility to maintain safe workplaces for their employees. This includes helping employees manage stress, whether that stress stems from work, their personal lives, or the COVID-19 pandemic. This doesn’t mean that work should always be stress-free, as we know that stress is a natural part of life. However, it is important for organizations to help their workers manage stress at high levels so that those workers can continue to be healthy and productive. From my experience, it has always been a good idea for employers to conduct quarterly stress studies on their workers to help determine how team members are feeling. They can even go as far as hiring Licensed Therapists to come in and talk with the team about stress management skills and techniques that can be used on the job.

For years, I have worked with companies whose team members just seem tired. Whether they were nodding off in a training, catching a nap during lunch, or simply moving slowly on the job, it’s no secret that American workers are chronically sleep-deprived and lacking enough rest.

With a workday averaging over 8.5 hours, the 2008 Sleep in America Poll found that Americans who are working from home are actually working an additional four hours each week. This may be contributed to the boundaries for work and sleep being highly blurred since working from home became the norm for so many people during the pandemic. Unfortunately, this research is finding that more work often equals less sleep. This same survey found that respondents’ sleep time was reduced by an hour and a half during workdays, compared to their sleep on non-workdays.

Trying to work without being fully rested can significantly impact worker safety performance. Without enough quality sleep, neurons in the brain can become overworked, impairing worker thinking, slowing reaction time, and leaving people feeling physically drained. Long-term sleep deprivation can have drastic consequences, including an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, and decreased processing speed in the brain.

In addition, this lack of sleep can leave a worker feeling irritable, angry, and stressed. A lack of quality sleep makes it more difficult to maintain focus, attention, and vigilance. It’s also been said that feeling drowsy and trying to stay awake takes a lot of mental energy, which makes it more difficult to stay focused on long tasks and those that require concentration. According to a recent article by the Sleep Foundation, The Link Between Sleep and Job Performance, “People who are sleep deprived are also more likely to make errors and omissions, partially due to increased reaction times”. This means that tired team members tend to take more time to react in critical situations and may be more likely to make a mistake or critical error. In some job positions, sufficient sleep is critical to the outcome of their task because impaired reaction times or slowed thinking could make the difference between life and death. Think about how confident you would feel if you knew your surgeon only had 2 hours of sleep before your surgery or your child’s bus driver only had 3 hours of sleep before picking your child up for school.

Worker fatigue and sleeplessness have a massive economic impact on the workplace, costing employers billions of dollars. According to an article, The Cost of Poor Sleep: Workplace Productivity Loss and Associated Costs, it’s estimated that reductions in productivity, motivation, and health care costs related to the lack of quality sleep cost individual employers around $1,967 annually per employee. In addition, in the article, Fatigue in the U.S. Workforce: Prevalence and Implications for Lost Productive Work Time, worker fatigue costs U.S. companies around $136.4 billion dollars a year.

Getting quality sleep for workers is essential to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. As a Safety Professional, I have always advised employers to conduct sleep studies or ask team members about their levels of sleep to help determine each person's level of fatigue. This is important data, allowing the employer to better understand just how long it takes their workers to get to sleep at night, how long they sleep without waking up, and what their level of mental readiness is before taking on the day. This information allows employers to see correlations and trends over time, and to note the effects of sleep and safety in the workplace.

What is Human Performance Training? Sensori Safety

Human performance training, is an alternative treatment that uses brain and eye exercises to determine how workers see, process, organize and respond to information. It is designed to improve performance in key areas such as attention, reaction time, focus, and hand-eye coordination for mobile equipment operators. It can also improve eye tracking, visual acuity, depth perception, and memory.

This concept of training has been used by practitioners for over 150 years. It was originally developed by ophthalmologists searching for a non-surgical alternative to treat strabismus (eye turn). These ophthalmologists created a series of visual exercises called “orthoptics”, meaning “straightening of the eye”.

In the mid-twentieth century an innovative group of optometrists realized that for vision therapy to be effective, vision must be viewed as much more than a simple mechanical neuro-muscular system. It was then that they went on to develop and expand vision therapy into the successful method of visual improvement it is today. This new form of vision therapy has given people a whole new way of interacting with the world.

Human performance training is remarkably successful in improving neurocognitive and visual-motor skills. Within 15-30 training sessions many of our users reported that they experienced:

Increased mental sharpness
Ability to filter out distractions
Ability to focus for longer time periods
Enhanced ability to make quick decisions

Human Performance training is designed as an individual and personalized treatment program that adapts to meet the capability and individual needs of each user. These neurocognitive and vision exercises consist of specialized 3-D computer programs and interactive training drills that are performed weekly, usually under the supervision of a Human Performance Coach.

The training works well for workers who struggle with maintaining attention and have a difficult time identifying objects in their peripheral and/or central fields of vision. It can be of good use to workers who have a difficult time comprehending information, move at slower speeds, or have issues with accuracy; and when the training program is complete, these benefits can last a lifetime. It is recommended that rather than stopping the program at the end of the 12-month period, this vision training remains ongoing throughout the worker's time at the facility, as the data shows that with time they will perform even better.

At Sensori Safety 20/20 vision is not enough! Just because a forklift operator can see doesn’t mean they have the quick reaction or attention skills needed to identify where an object is in their peripheral, accurately recognize how fast it’s traveling, or note if it’s changing direction.

Battling Complacency the Workplace

Complacency affects every workplace and employee to a different degree. It can often show up as a false sense of security which leads to a lack of awareness of your surroundings. This can be anything from letting your guard down and losing focus, to not actively looking for hazards. A complacent mindset is the most dangerous presence in the workplace.

Complacency can be viewed as an inaccurate perception of risk. The more you do something with nothing adverse happening, the more secure you begin to feel, thinking that you can complete the task without consequence. However, too much familiarity with a hazard can breed complacency.

Complacency can put a person in “auto-pilot” mode, causing them to move step by step without thinking critically about their actions. This can increase the potential for risks and injuries, and it can happen regardless of age or experience. Whether it’s the result of spending too much time on a task or getting too comfortable with a daily routine, we can all work to minimize the risk of becoming complacent.

Think about how many times you have driven a car and gotten to your destination without realizing how you got there or what route you took. Think about how many people continue to text and drive knowing the hazards associated with their actions, or how many team members use the stairs without utilizing the safety handrails. Complacency is present in more places than we realize.

Too often you do not notice how complacent you’ve become until you have had a near miss or a close call. Though this can grab your attention for some time, it can be easy for someone to become complacent once again, at least until an injury occurs.

The fact is that injuries, big or small, are difficult to prevent with compliance alone. This is because they are largely the result of worker actions that are often fueled by complacency and other human factors leading to unintentional errors. Awareness, safety training, and safety protocols alone, cannot win this battle. We must assess, analyze, and measure the human factors that lead to inattention and worker complacency.

In 2021, we conducted a vision and neurocognitive training research study due to employers experiencing high numbers of mobile equipment incidents. After the training drill, it was determined that the operator's Left-Hand Peripheral Field of Vision was 274ms slower than their Left-Hand Central Field of Vision. It was also determined that the operator's Right-Hand Peripheral Field of Vision was 424ms slower than their Right-Hand Central Field of Vision. This indicates a significant difference in reaction time with Peripheral Field of Vision drills yielding longer reaction times than Central Field of Vision drills.

With respect to Central Field of Vision drills only, the Right-Hand drills took 164ms longer in reaction time than the Left-Hand drills. This indicated that although the Right Hand is the subject's dominant hand, it was 164ms slower than the left hand.

Regarding Peripheral Field of Vision drills only, the Right-Hand drills took 314ms longer in reaction time than the Left-Hand drills. This indicated that the Right Hand was 314ms slower than the left hand, although the Right Hand is the subject's dominant hand.

What we can tell from the data is that overall, the subject's central field of vision yields faster reaction time than their peripheral field of vision. In comparison to left and right vision (both central and peripheral), the subject has a slower reaction time on the right side, although this is their dominant side/hand.

This may indicate that a member's dominant hand/side of the body may have a slower reaction time than expected, which may be contributed to the familiarity that comes with the use of a dominant/frequently used hand. It is important to note that these slower reaction times with the dominant hand could indicate complacency.

Complacency is a common contributor to unintentional injuries. When workers get overly comfortable with a procedure, they’ll often mentally minimize the amount of risk involved. Complacency can then be exacerbated by a belief that rules and regulations form an infallible safety net. Vision Training for Crane Operators

According to U.S. Department of Labor, 249 industrial overhead crane incidents occurred over a 10-year period. Of those 249 incidents that occurred, 838 OSHA violations were committed, and those 249 incidents resulted in 133 injuries and 133 fatalities.

The incidents revealed that the top causes and results of the incidents were:

37% - Crushed by the Load (load swing, load drop, or by an unstable load being placed and immediately falling over). Crushed by the Load resulted in 33.8% of all fatalities and 36.8% of all injuries.
27% - Load Dropped (most common root cause of load drops is poor rigging practices)
12% - Caused by a Fall (from heights of 8 ft. to 100+ ft.)
11% - Injured Person Crushed / Run Over by an Overhead or Gantry Crane. 93% of these incidents resulted in a fatality.
6% Improper / Absent Lock Out Tag – Out (LOTO)
7% - Other

These violations led to $2.3 million dollars in OSHA fines.

The average major injury has a cost of over $200,000; while the average fatality has a cost of over $4 million.

When you think about the causes of these incidents, many would probably consider the lack of training or failed inspections as contributing factors, and they may be correct. However, it is shocking that the operator’s vision is not considered when training or incident investigations are conducted. Think about it.

How many departments in your organization have requirements for visual inspections? How many of the codes, regulations, and legislative mandates demand that visual inspections be performed on a regular basis? Think of the requirements for slings and wire ropes, crane parts, manufacturer labels regarding lifting instructions. Yet, how many of those same codes require the inspectors (your employees) to be able to see and to see correctly? Does your company have vision requirements for crane operators? If so, how does your company measure the operators' speed, coordination, peripheral awareness and accuracy? How does your company ensure that lack of depth perception is not contributing to your incidents?

Employees hired to drive or operate machinery will not have the same visual abilities 20 to 25 years from now. Common life processes will diminish some acuity, while diseases such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, stroke, and trauma can and do alter the visual abilities of employees.

Slowly, American industries adopted procedures that administer quick drug and alcohol testing of employees involved in industrial mishaps or collisions, yet few if any employers test the vision of employees after a mishap. Oftentimes, the amount of damage done by a crane or forklift operator is written off as “operator error” when the root cause is visual.

Ask yourself some questions:

What are the vision requirements to receive a driver’s license in your state?
If you do not know the vision requirements of your state, why do you rely upon them to be your company’s standard? And if you do know what they are, are they adequate for the work your employees are required to perform?
Does your state have a field of view requirement? Does it allow binocular attachments to reach the required visual acuity?
How do you know if your employees need corrective lenses to operate company equipment?
How many drug or alcohol tests have you administered after incidents in the past five years? How many of those incidents might have been a result of a visual error?
How do you know if your employees can see the things they are supposed to be inspecting?
In your most critical and/or dangerous jobs, what is the useful field of view that your employees must be able to see horizontally or vertically?
Have you experienced incidents involving property damage caused by employees driving a machine, either on or off company property? In how many of those incidents did you question the visual abilities of the employee operating the machine?

Vision Training for Forklift Drivers

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), forklifts cause about 85 fatal accidents per year, with 34,900 accidents resulting in serious injury, and 61,800 classified as non-serious. The Industrial Truck Association (ITA), states that there are about 855,900 forklifts in the U.S. Therefore, over 11% of all forklifts will be involved in some type of accident each year (assuming only one accident per forklift).

The ITA also reports that the useful life of a lift truck is about 8 years. This means that about 90% of all forklifts will be involved in some type of accident in its lifetime, assuming there is only one accident per forklift. There is a possibility that at least one driver per forklift will be involved in a forklift incident at some point in their career.

Studies show that many of these accidents could have been prevented with better forklift training. We agree, but also wonder, what type of training? Forklift driving training is good for teaching skills and providing knowledge, but alone it does not guarantee a reduction in forklift incidents. With years of conducting forklift training and investigating accidents, one of the biggest factors noted was that the operator did not see the object they struck, nor did they see the pedestrian walking in the direction of travel. Many times, operators will receive drug testing, and undergo more forklift training and even receive disciplinary actions but things don’t seem to change. The root cause of the incident will be labeled operator error when in turn it could be that the operator lacked the speed to react, lacked visual clarity, or lacked the hand-eye coordination needed to make a quick decision. Ask your team the last time your forklift driver completed vision testing and training. Don’t take your operators' vision for granted. To truly combat the risk of forklift accidents we must test and train the operators' vision.
