What is an HSE Data Analyst?

The world of the Occupational Health and Safety industry is changing along with many other industries. The world of data has taken us by storm with Al technologies that can predict patterns in human behaviors to robots that are built to preserve human life. Data is what drives safety performance in the workplace especially when it comes to audit records, tracking training completion, OSHA injury statistics, closed incident investigations as well as the number of Hazards reported and closed out.

Data has become the decision-maker in the workplace. It is what management teams use to drive better business decisions to keep workers safe and build a cleaner environment. HSE Data Analysts play an important role in helping companies fulfill their mission of getting better by using data. They are responsible for using data to uncover hidden risks, learning the patterns in their data, and helping to stop injuries in the workplace. They are accountable for driving consistency in developing and preparing metrics, streamlining data processes, and increasing data quality. The HSE Data Analyst will help to perform data extraction and mining to identify trends, check for errors, build data models, design visualizations, and present safety data statistics to site leadership. Many individuals in this role have an Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) background with experience in performing data analysis and developing and tracking metrics.

Most HSE Data Analysts are comfortable navigating various databases such as Power BI dashboards, Microsoft Excel, SQL, Power Query, and SharePoint systems. The most experienced individuals are proficient in writing computer coding such as Python, “R” and “M” languages and have a good sense for finding data patterns, and are skilled in conducting business presentations. And that’s exactly what an HSE Analyst is all about. A person who collects, tracks, and analyzes big data to get better results for HSE teams.
