12 EHS Scholarships That Get Overlooked by HSE Students

Going to college for the first time can be tough especially when you are trying to understand how to pay for it. But what’s interesting is how many students overlook free money. According to the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) reports an estimated $100 million in scholarship money still goes unawarded each year, mostly due to a lack of applicants. I have been an EHS professional for a decade now and it didn’t dawn on me how many EHS scholarships and grants that are available for students to pursue an education in the field of Environmental, Health and Safety until I did some research.
1. The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association scholarship program is open to people who are pursuing careers in the mining industry, safety, and health-related fields. Scholarship requirements are available here: https://www.holmessafety.org/scholarship/
2. Dr. Martin Blank — SYB Scholarship for Health Safety and Education was created to encourage the participation of under-represented communities in the area of building health, safety, and education. 3. The Gary Wilson Borders Scholarship is for United States Marines who want to pursue an education in Environmental & Safety Services. The program pays 100% tuition. Scholarship awards are requirements here: https://naspweb.com/financial-aid/
4. 360training’s Workplace Safety Scholarship Program provides one exemplary student per semester with $1,000 to use for their tuition. This program provides funds to qualified high school students in their pursuit of an undergraduate degree. 5. The VPPPA Scholarship Program offers four scholarships each worth $3,500 to support students who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to safety and health in their schools and communities. Members and family (child, grandchild, spouse) of full-member sites in good standing should apply for VPPPA scholarships when pursuing a vocational, undergraduate, or graduate degree in the safety, health, or environmental fields. 6. CareerSafe’s National Youth Safety Essay Scholarship Contest. Students are encouraged to submit a written or recorded essay describing how their OSHA training has made an impact on the way they recognize hazards and how that knowledge will be a benefit to their future. 8. The Kentucky Safety and Health Network’s “SAFE” Award scholarship provides awards for students who are interested in pursuing a degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or a related field. 9. NSC Diversity in Safety Scholarship provides the winner with a $5,000 tuition award, renewable for up to four years. BIPOC individuals, people with disabilities, and people who identify as LGBTQIA+ who are seeking post-secondary education leading to a career in environmental, health, and/or safety. 10. The Road to Safety Scholarship Contest provides Pennsylvania high school seniors with the opportunity to submit a creative project about the dangers of drunk driving or distracted driving for the chance to win college scholarship money. 11. ASSP Foundation Academic Scholarship Program is available for students within the occupational safety and health field, preparing for their careers or looking to supplement their careers with additional college coursework. 12. ASSP Foundation Professional Education Grant Program is available for individuals within the occupational safety and health field (either students or professionals) who need financial support for certification expenses, conference attendance, webinar attendance, workshop attendance, and similar professional development support.
